One Saturday, my daughter Jane showed up unexpectedly, asking
me to watch her son, Tommy, for a couple of weeks due to a work project.

Days turned to weeks, and I couldn’t find her. Panic set in when I learned
Tommy’s dangerous father was back in town. Jane had likely fled to protect him.
She later called, claiming she was on a secret mission but wouldn’t say where.
When Jane finally returned, she looked worn but safe. Tommy was thrilled, but as
