I live with my ex-husband, and recently, without asking me, he changed our porch light to green. When I questioned him about it,
he simply said it was for his father, who had passed away, but didn’t explain further. I was curious and started looking into what a green porch light means.
It turns out, green porch lights have symbolic meaning in many communities. They’re often used as a quiet sign of support and awareness.
1. Support for Veterans:
One of the most common meanings comes from the “Greenlight A Vet” campaign, launched in 2013. The green light is a symbol of gratitude and support for military veterans returning to civilian life. It represents renewal, well-being, and appreciation.
2. Mental Health Awareness:
Green is also used to raise awareness for mental health, especially during May (Mental Health Awareness Month)
and on World Mental Health Day (October 10). It symbolizes healing, calmness, and balance.
3. Solidarity and Remembrance:
In some cases, green lights are used to show unity during hard times—such as health crises or after disasters.
They’re a subtle but powerful way to show remembrance or support.
So, while I was confused at first, I now understand my ex-husband’s green porch light is likely
a quiet tribute to his late father—perhaps for his service, mental health struggles, or simply in loving memory.
