On July 24, former President Donald Trump signed a new executive order aimed at removing homeless individuals

from public spaces, sparking backlash nationwide. The order directs Attorney General Pam Bondi to challenge court

decisions and consent decrees that limit the forced relocation of homeless people—particularly

those with mental health conditions—into treatment facilities.

Trump stated the move is meant to “restore public safety” and provide “compassionate treatment through

civil commitment.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the plan as a step toward “Making America Safe Again.”

However, critics argue the order criminalizes poverty without addressing core issues like housing

costs or economic hardship. The National Homelessness Law Center called it “dangerous,” warning

it could worsen homelessness by diverting funds from housing and essential services.
