Authorities in New Zealand have confirmed that three children missing for nearly four years have been found

alive and safe in the remote Waitomo region. The case began in 2021 when Tom Phillips vanished into the bush

with his children — Ember, Maverick, and Jayda. Despite a massive search and brief sightings,

the family remained hidden, sparking concerns about how the children survived harsh winters.

On September 8, 2025, police tracked the family to rugged terrain. Around 4:30 p.m., the children were found

about two kilometers from a secluded hideout. Specialized teams were praised for navigating the difficult area.

“To know the children are safe is an absolute relief,” Acting Deputy Commissioner Jill Rogers said,

urging respect for their privacy as recovery begins. While unharmed, the rescue was tough — one officer

was injured and is now recovering. The children’s mother and grandparents were notified immediately and are helping with care.

How the family lived off-grid remains unclear, though investigators suspect community help.

The case gained national attention in 2022 after surveillance footage showed Tom with a child in a store.

Though Tom is no longer part of the investigation, questions linger as the children start a new chapter focused on healing.
