Phantom of the Opera Performer Passes at 46

Theater mourns the loss of Ben Lewis, beloved West End star best known for The Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies.

Admired for his commanding voice and warmth on stage, Lewis was also a kind mentor who inspired countless

young performers. His passing at 46 leaves a deep void in the theater community and among fans worldwide.

The news was first shared by Australian host Todd Woodbridge, who called Lewis “one of the greats,” recalling fond memories from Scotland

holidays and backstage visits at London’s Her Majesty’s Theatre. Tributes poured in online, and a GoFundMe was launched to support his family.

Lewis was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2024. Despite surgery and chemotherapy, the disease spread aggressively.

Born into a family of classically trained singers, he studied at the Royal College of Music and the Western Australian Academy

of Performing Arts, earning acclaim for roles in Urinetown, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and A Little Night Music.

His role in Love Never Dies earned the Judith Johnson Award for Best Actor, and he later reprised the Phantom in London

(2017–2018). Beyond his talent, Ben Lewis will be remembered for his grace, generosity, and enduring artistic legacy.
